Motorcycle Parking Improvements For MK Train Station are required for the following reasons:
1) Parking: At present there are not enough spaces for motorcycles to park. This is exasperated during the warmer summer months. A set aside reserve overflow area needs to be determined and specified that bikes can park at, so as not to cause inconvenience for other users of the train station and to inform the motorcyclist where they can park legally.
2) Motorcycle Security: Security is a major concern for all owners of motorcycles from scooters to sports bikes. The need for a security tie-down poles or similar devices are required to add security to this very vulnerable area of motor vehicle theft and to deter would be thief's from lifting motorcycles into vans. Over 26,000 motorcycles and scooters a year are stolen in the UK according to The Motorcycle Industry Association (MCI).
3) Weather Protection: Weather Protection has been withdrawn in the recent modernisation and improvements at the station. Having adequate weather protection is important in helping to maintain the vehicle in full working order. In the previous parking provision this was available and during the winter months helped to keep everything from rain to snow from being on your bike when you returned back home. During the winter its especially important to minimise the amount of standing water on the bike, as brake discs that get wet can can form layers of ice which stops the bike from stopping when needed. By having a roof, this limits the amount of water standing on your bike during a day.
All of the above three points were available in the previous motorcycle parking provision, that was allowed under the old format of the station parking. This is nothing new, but a request to have the same provisions put in place once again for the biking community that use the station for commuting for work.
